Student serving the local community

Welcome to Service Learning Program at  Texas State university. We serve around 2000 students every year and contribute around 2.8 million dollars to local community. Our Goal is to engage students in real time environment to experiment on what they learn which also benefits the local community.

Credit is given for the learning that takes place, not simply for completing service hours. Service-Learning is different from community service, internships, or field study experiences because the service activity is connected to the course(s) learning objectives through reflection and critical analysis, balancing benefits to the student with benefits to the community partners. Experiential learning classes and programs fall under the guidance of the SLE Program

Our MISSION is to enrich the collegiate learning experience by encouraging civic engagement. We assist faculty and students find opportunities to serve that enhance academic understanding while also strengthening the San Marcos community and beyond.

We recognize Service-Learning Excellence FELLOWS by providing students with certificates of completion.

We provide FACULTY RESOURCES to assist service-learning courses and incorporating SL into their research.

We provide our SL Fellows the opportunity to apply for Service-Learning Excellence MINI-GRANTS.  Faculty may apply for resources (up to $500, per faculty member).

It was cool to get actually DO  what we're going to be doing in the field. I enjoyed working with my group on hands-on tasks that will actually help me in the real world. I was also really surprised that were able to pull it off without any previous experience!.- DB
